Teaching Information

The following are several of my class proposals, please contact me if you have any questions:

---Easy Victorian Feathers and Ferns
With the help of a few gadgets you can free motion quilt feathers that will mirror each other in your design.  We have many customers who don’t want you to mark their quilts because they didn’t wash their fabric.  I’ll teach you how to be able to do those beautiful feathers free hand.  I’ll have free handouts you can take home to remember the lesson.  I’ll demonstrate on a Long arm machine (Cindy only if you have available or I’ll do on overhead).  Bring your sketch book so you can practice with me.

---Designing an original Butterfly Quilt (one or two day class) Part of my Comp and Design Class For the Omaha Quilters In a one day class, there will be very little sewing as designing and turning the edges under and preparing for sewing does take a while.

In this class I will teach you how to draw and design a contemporary butterfly quilt. Then we will make the pattern. The edges will be easily turned under and all glued in place. I will bring stabilizer and freezer paper for you to use. This stabilizer can be left in the quilt and does not need to be removed. I will let you sample this stabilizer but we will mostly be using the freezer paper in this class. I will show you how to use many fun fabrics you have in your stash and mix them together with a few calm fabrics. Bring at least 5 fat quarters of your favorite theme fabrics. Bring calming fabrics. Be adventurous and bring lots of things you wouldn’t normally put together. Also bring a few black and white fabrics (about a fat quarter), and a textured black background fabric that reads as a solid (about a yard). You’ll need to bring 2 or 3 Elmer’s glue sticks, a cuticle stick, fabric and paper scissors, pencil, Sharpie fine marker, Roxanne’s Glue Baste it, small traveling iron and ironing pad, sewing machine (with a zig zag stitch), fine bobbin thread such as Superior thread, and fine clear invisible thread for the top (like Sulky). Email me if you have questions about what to bring, jwquilts@yahoo.com. The first day we will put the quilt together and do a little sewing. If it is a two day class we have time to completely appliqué it by machine the second day. It can be sewn by hand if you prefer. I’ll also share with you how I designed my newest quilt and share many tips on how to make an award winning quilt.p>

---Free Motion Quilting made easy (for beginners and intermediate)
You’ll learn how to do feathers, sashing treatment, block designs and overall Quilting.  You’ll get a free booklet.  Judy will teach you how to have fun when you quilt and make wonderful curls and swirls that your customers will love.  Her easy going teaching style will make you relax, smile and enjoy quilting.  Mostly geared toward long arm quilters but techniques can be applied to regular sewing machine.

---Whole Cloth Marking and Painting Tips

This award winning quilter will bring over 200 stencils and teach you how to design your own original whole cloth quilt. You’ll be learning about the fundamentals of design and what backfills will go best in each contained quilting area. She’ll have a sample quilt that you can actually practice the newest craze of fabric painting on a whole cloth quilt. Bring white or off white quality fabrics at least 65” by 65” or slightly bigger. Bring 3 blue water-soluble markers (Mark-B-Gone is best), 1 blue pen Clover erasers, 12 by 6 inch ruler, 24 by 6 inch ruler, and a large square ruler if you can pack and bring. In this class we will only design the quilt so you will not need a sewing machine. You’ll also learn about blocking, and getting your quilt ready to show, and some binding tips. This quilt is for hand sewers, domestic machine quilters, or Longarm quilters. Judy’s quilts have won many National quilt awards and she can take you to the next level. If you email Judy she will bring your fabric and, or markers and erasers. You’ll still need to bring your rulers. jwquilts@yahoo.com

---Whole Cloth Marking Lecture and Demonstration

This award winning quilter will demonstrate how to use and mark stencils for traditional, contemporary and Welsh style quilts and wearable art.  She’ll also demonstrate how to draw feathers so bring a sketch book and ultra fine black sharpie.  She’ll demonstrate how to paint your whole cloth.  You’ll leave inspired to try your own traditional or contempory quilt or wearable art.

The whole cloth marking class would be a six hour class.  The other classes can be two or three hour lectures.  I would be willing to teach every day.  Can you tell me about your pay structure for teachers?

Design and Technique’s Class
(also known as Let’s just Play)
Judy Woodworth

This National award winning quilter will present a Composition and Design class for the first hour.  During this lecture, you’ll learn how to design an original quilt, choose the right colors, and select the best composition format for your next quilt.  She’ll bring many of her award winning quilts for inspiration.  Then for the next five hours, you’ll get to play.  She’ll take you through many of her favorite appliqué and piecing techniques.  (This will not include paper piecing or needle turn appliqué.  You will not use fusible web.)  Judy has gotten permission from Sharon Schamber (Best of Show winner) to teach you Sharon’s new appliqué method that uses stabilizer that you do not need to be remove because when it’s wet it turns into fabric.  Judy will teach you Sharon’s Piec-lique piecing.  She’ll show you how to use clothing stabilizer to design an original appliqué.  If time allows, Judy will show you her own favorite method to piece with freezer paper and maybe tell you a little about beading. You’ll be provided with both types of stabilizers free and a free pattern for you to take home but you won’t be doing a project in class.  Again, we are just going to play and experiment.  You won’t need to purchase any new material.  You’ll be using your own scraps to get through all these fun techniques.  You’ll be allowed to play with one technique that really interests you the most, or all of them.  At the end of the day you’ll have enough confidence to design your own original quilt.  There will be door prizes.
